An Update on the MRC

May, 2010

Dear friends of the MRC:

Last year, in the face of a challenging economic climate, the MRC board decided it was necessary to make major changes within the organization. Our goal was to continue the legacy of our work in the best possible manner while maintaining financial viability.

  • The Moving Forward Batterer's Intervention Program was transferred successfully to a well-established local human service agency, ServiceNet. Under the continued leadership of Eve Bogdanove, Steve Trudel and many of the longstanding group facilitator staff, this well-developed program model continues to make a key difference in domestic violence intervention. (You can reach Moving Forward at 413=587-9050 or toll-free at 888-636-9050.)
  • Four men's drop-in support groups continue to meet every week. See the right-hand column of this page for more information.
  • Our information and referral services respond to phone calls.
  • Voice Male Magazine is now published independently by Rob Okun and has continued to delve into emerging and cutting edge issues around gender and positive masculinity. For more information about Voice Male, contact him at rob@voicemalemagazine.org.
  • We maintain ongoing affiliations with programs and individuals aligned with our mission.

We sold our building on North Pleasant Street and currently have a "virtual office" with our same phone number (413-253-9887). Our mailing address is P.O. Box 3100, Amherst, MA 01004. The well-timed sale of the building has allowed us to retain a "nest egg"; of capital for future projects. We have eliminated all paid positions, thus returning to our roots as an all-volunteer organization that date back to the 1980s.

What's next?

In January, we convened about twenty MRC stakeholders and held a day-long retreat to "re-envision" our mission and core values. We are crafting this statement of purpose as the first step in a strategic planning process to direct the next phase of MRC activity. We welcome ongoing input and participation from all who would like to contribute to our work. Stay tuned for more!

On behalf of the Board, I want extend our appreciation for the past and continuing support of so many of you who have allowed the MRC to make a difference. Because of all of you, we can look back over our past 25 years of effort in the community and see the profound impact we have made.

Respectfully,

Mark Nickerson

MRC Board Chair

A Special Message for Our Friends:

Greetings Friends and Allies of the MRC,

From time to time, we at the MRC receive requests to share specific content and information with our friends and supporters. We screen these requests quite carefully, discuss them at our Board meetings, and deliberate as to appropriateness, relevance, and timing. The link below is something that we feel is important for our friends to know about as it fits within the broad context of our mission and vision. It is for information-sharing only, and we leave it to you to decide if and when you might wish to follow up according to your own personal considerations.

Participants in the Amherst groups are requested to park on the side of the lot closest to the Synthesis Center or at the parking meters on the street (free after 6 p.m.).

The Tuesday night general support group (open to all men) meets at the North Star Learning Center at 135 Russell St., Hadley from 7 to 9 P.M, but the entrance is on Route 47; participants enter through the front door which faces Route 47 and the Hadley Town Hall located across the street.

There is some limited parking on the street, as well as in the Town Hall parking lot, and behind the high school which is 131 Russell St. There are signs directing participants to the meeting room on the second floor.

The Wednesday night general support group in Greenfield meets at Network Chiropractic, 21 Mohawk Trail (Rte 2A), from7 to 9 PM.
